A Guide to Three Spots to Go Exploring

Shelling is one of those activities anyone can enjoy. Grab your bag and set off to wander the shoreline a few hours before or after low tide. Another great time to go looking for shells is after a storm, as the weather can turn up even more treasures.

When figuring out where to go shelling, you can try it almost anywhere water and sand meet. However, there are some places near Cape San Blas known for their plethora of shells. Remember, live shelling is prohibited at most beaches. If an animal is in the shell, please leave it be.

1. T.H. Stone Memorial St. Joseph Peninsula State Park features sandy beaches and tall dunes on its Gulf Side and a marsh on the bay side. Thanks to having access to two beaches, this is one of the best options in the area.

2. Salinas Park in nearby Port St. Joe has two sides: a gulfside and a bayside. You’ll want to head to the gulfside portion for your shelling adventure. While you may not find large shells, the shores here are known for scallop shells.

 3. The white-sand beaches at William J “Billy Joe” Rish Recreation Area are ripe for exploring. Found along the Gulf of Mexico, this natural attraction has earned a reputation as an excellent place to look for shells.

What to Look For

Knowing where to look is only half the battle. It’s also important to know what you’re looking for. There are several types of shells you can find along the beaches near Cape San Blas, including periwinkle, fan scallop, horse conch, and Junonia. To help you know what you’re looking for, download or purchase a Florida seashell handbook.
